Employment Champion

One of the key issues for addressing disadvantage in East London is the issue of employment. At ELBA we know that to really make a difference, we need to encourage our member companies and their subcontractors to give jobs to local people. We are delighted to recognise the work of London City Airport in this category.

Take Off Into Work, a joint initiative between London City Airport and Newham Workplace, was launched in 2009 to address the gap in soft skills preventing many local interviewees securing employment. Despite reduced passenger numbers and the impact on recruitment, London City Airport has remained committed to the programme, engaging their 62 on-site employers such as City Jet and WH Smith. More than 60 local people have been through the programme since April.
